Clear Advantages of Smoke-free Multi-Unit Housing

Burlington Partnership for a Healthy Community staff works with other local partners to support landlords and property managers efforts to provide smoke and tobacco-free housing in Vermont. We developed a 4-part series of short videos about the benefits of smoke-free properties and how to reduce barriers to implementing a smoke-free policy. Additional information is provided at the end of each video with resources to access for support.

In the first video, Kate Nugent, Executive Director of the Winooski Partnership for Prevention, and Rhonda Williams, Chronic Disease Prevention Chief with the Vermont Department of Health, discuss the benefits of smoke-free housing.

In the second video Mariah Sanderson, Coalition Director of the Burlington Partnership for a Healthy Community, and Nadine Scibek, Attorney, discuss landlords’ rights to ban smoking in their buildings.

In the third video, Amy Brewer, Coordinator with the Franklin Grand Isle Tobacco Prevention Coalition, is joined by Michael McCaffrey, Associate Director of Property Management at the Champlain Housing Trust, Joe Villemaire, CEO of Rockstar Property Management, and Chasidy Benjamin, Tobacco Treatment Specialist with Northwestern Medical Center, to explain the transition to smoke-free housing using the personal insights from a local landlord and others who deal with this issue on a daily basis.

And in the final video, Amy Brewer, Coordinator with the Franklin Grand Isle Tobacco Prevention Coalition, is joined by Michael McCaffrey, Associate Director of Property Management at the Champlain Housing Trust, and Chasidy Benjamin, Tobacco Treatment Specialist with Northwestern Medical Center, to explain the process of implementing a smoke-free housing policy. The group also goes into greater detail on how to maintain this policy and keep tenants and their properties safe.
