Catching Up with BHS Elevate

BHS Elevate, our wellness campaign centering youth substance use prevention and mental health support for Burlington high schoolers has been continuing to grow in popularity at the high school. It has been exciting to see more and more students engage with the information and share their own reasons for avoiding substance use in high school.

We want to extend a big THANK YOU to the 12 BHS staff who shared their personal stories of adults in their life they felt supported by as part of the campaign’s focus on building trusted adult relationships.

In February we focused on “Elevating above the industry’s tricks” and highlighted the ways that the tobacco industry is working to try to hook their next generation of people addicted to nicotine. BHS students shared with Elevate the “tricks” that they had seen in their own lives, such as ads on their walk to school or in their social media feeds, influencers promoting nicotine products, and fruity flavors to mask the flavors of nicotine and other harsh chemicals.

In March and April we are focusing on “Make memories, not regrets” and highlighting ways to make positive memories in highschool that are not influenced by the negative impacts of alcohol and cannabis use on the developing brain.
